The ARF Prison Foster Program began in 2007. It has since grown to a partnership with four area correctional institutions. The program benefits both the handlers and the animals in very profound ways. Offenders selected to participate in this accredited work program receive special training that enables them to provide care, socialization, and behavior training to dogs and cats, often selected due to their need for special attention or a less stressful environment than the shelter. The animals thrive under this one-on-one attention, and benefit from socialization with people and other animals. Plus, these ongoing foster programs free up valuable space in our shelter and allow us to help more animals in need. Funding is needed to continue to provide training for the handlers, transportation for the dogs, food and any required medications for the dogs in the program.
